Kaka Will remain at Milan

Kaka - staying at Milan.

Chief executive Garry Cook led the sombre return of a defeated Manchester City delegation back from Milan on Monday night with the words of jubilant AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi ringing in their ears.

While City officials could offer a wry smile at the Italian Prime Minister, whose club were perfectly willing to sell their favourite son at an estimated price of £90million, they will have to start getting used to the sly chortles at an audacious move that did not quite work out as planned.

"We offered the player the chance to consider the offer and make himself a fortune, but he has higher values," said Berlusconi.

"He is staying with us, there are things which are more important than money: we are happy.

"When I heard he would prefer to stay, that he didn't think he would be missing a great opportunity and he prefers the values of our flag, the values of closeness and friendship, the warmth and the affection that all the fans have shown him in these days, I said 'hooray' and we hugged. Kaka is staying at Milan."

In conceding a first-round defeat, Cook acknowledged it was always a long shot to persuade Kaka he should join the City revolution.

Without managing to meet the 26-year-old face to face, Cook was forced to deal with Milan officials and Kaka's father Bosco Leite.

And it soon became apparent there were too many parts of the deal, almost certainly involving get-out clauses for the South American, that made it pointless to continue.

"Whilst Manchester City Football Club has an obvious interest in world-class players of the quality of Kaka, we owe it to our fans that such a transfer must work on every level; commercially, financially, in terms of results on the field and within Manchester City's broader community," Cook told www.mcfc.co.uk.

City have made it clear that having missed out on Kaka, they will not be turning their attention to stars of a similar status, such as Barcelona's

It means Blues supporters will have to be realistic in the players manager Mark Hughes adds to his squad this month following Monday's £14million arrival of Craig Bellamy.

Twelve months ago, such a transfer would have represented a club record. But now it feels almost like an anti-climax.

However, Hughes has worked with Bellamy twice before and knows the value he can add, providing the Wales striker can keep his combustible temper in check.

And, as Bellamy correctly pointed out, these are exciting times for the club.

"It is going to be incredible here over the next couple of years," he told www.mcfc.co.uk.

"It's not just for me, you speak to anyone in the Premier League and they would want to come to Manchester City. It's rare for that to happen outside of the top four but I think there are a lot of players who would like to come to this club.

"There are so many things happening here that are out of this world, it was an offer I just could not walk away from."

Hughes feels Bellamy's rapid pace is an asset City have been sadly lacking this term, as is the midfield strength another target, Nigel De Jong, will bring provided he agrees the switch from Hamburg.

Unlike Dutch midfielder De Jong, who has played in the competition for his present club Hamburg, Bellamy is free to play in City's UEFA Cup campaign this term and once West Ham stated a transfer to local rivals Tottenham was a non-starter, it took barely any time for negotiations to be concluded.

As it turned out, the same was unexpectedly true of Kaka, only not in the manner City wanted.

Fortune favours the Baggies

West Bromwich Albion have further boosted their attacking options by signing Marc-Antoine Fortune.

The French-Guyana forward has joined the Baggies on loan for the rest of the season from French top-flight outfit Nancy.

The 27-year-old hitman cannot be recalled by his parent club during the duration of his loan - and Albion also have an exclusive option to buy Fortune during the summer.

Fortune's availability for Saturday's Barclays Premier League match with Middlesbrough is now subject to the club receiving international clearance in time.

His arrival follows on from the loan signing of Arsenal starlet Jay Simpson, who notched his first goal in Baggies colours in Tuesday's FA Cup win at Peterborough.

Fortune joined Nancy in 2007 and his six goals last term helped them finish fourth and qualify for the UEFA Cup.

He began his career with a four-year stint at French side Angouleme and has also enjoyed spells with Lille, Rouen (loan), Brest and Utrecht.

Fortune will be competing with current strikers Roman Bednar, Luke Moore and Craig Beattie plus Simpson for a starting place.

Baggies manager Tony Mowbray is desperate to bolster a goal record of just 17 in 21 Barclays Premier League matches - a major reason why Albion are currently occupying bottom spot.

Darren Bent ready to quit Tottenham following Jermain Defoe return

Darren Bent (Getty)

Darren Bent is ready to quit Spurs following the return of £15million love rival Jermain Defoe.

They fell out last year over a number of issues, including a bust-up over a former girlfriend.

Bent is believed to be devastated at Defoe's return and would welcome the chance to resurrect his career at a northern club such as Newcastle or Everton.

Boss Harry Redknapp is believed to be willing to listen to offers for the former Charlton marksman.

Bent and Defoe were rivals over a string of issues - both on and off the pitch - last year during Defoe's first spell at Spurs.

They ranged from football and friends to the height of their public profile.

It is believed Bent even tried to date ex-Celebrity Big Brother contestant Chantelle Houghton afterDefoe had dated her, but was turned down.

Bent's relationship with some of his other team-mates at Spurs has also deteriorated.

It is understood some players were unimpressed at a lack of respect shown to Ledley King in a dressing-room incident last year after the club captain had returned from treatment in America.

With Defoe certain to command a first-team place under boss Redknapp and Roman Pavlyuchenko in stunning form, there appears no place in the Spurs starting line-up for Bent - even though he was their only source of goals earlier this season.

Newcastle ready to sign former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise

John Arne Riise is close to resurrecting his Premier League career by joining Newcastle.

Joe Kinnear wants the Roma and former Liverpool left-back to replace Jose Enrique, who he plans to sell.

Riise, 28, could join on loan with a £6m permanent deal to follow..

Craig Bellamy heads to Manchester City after £10m offer

Craig Bellamy (pic:Getty)

Craig Bellamy is on his way to Manchester City – after boss Mark Hughes made a new £10million-plus bid to see off Tottenham.

The Welsh ace, 29, should be reunited with his old Wales and Blackburn Rovers manager over the weekend as West Ham prepare to accept the new offer.

City’s bid includes cash up front plus extra money in bonuses and the Hammers seem sure to sell him and then keep hold of as many of their other players as possible.

Hughes has been backed to buy Bellamy by his club’s money men, but they have yet to increase their offers for team-mates Scott Parker and Matthew Upson, while moves for Kolo Toure and Roque Santa Cruz are uncertain.

Andrei Arshavin an Arsenal target as Arsene Wenger looks to add quality

Andrei Arshavin move held up by Zenit St Petersburg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains interested in signing Andriy Arshavin, the Zenit St Petersburg forward, though he preferred to play a straight bat when questioned about the Russian, available for £20 million.

“The situation from our perspective is to keep everything secret and quite and not to talk too much,” said Wenger.

“Tactically the selling club is always more interested to getting things public than the buying club. I cannot confirm or deny anything.

“It’s like every January: in December everybody becomes absolutely agitated, but so far we are seeing what we see every year, there are very few moves. If you understand the financial situation you understand why most clubs are very quiet.

“Nothing is missing from our squad but you always want to add some quality to what you have. I believe we are a bit short number wise.

“But we have enough quality. We have a squad of quality and we want always to improve that kind of quality.”

The Frenchman is refusing to panic despite the fact that he is down to four fit mainstream defenders for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Bolton.

And Wenger insists that he will not be bringing a new defender to the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger confirmed that central defender William Gallas is out for up to four weeks, while Mikael Silvestre, another defender, will be missing for three weeks.

However, with Kolo Toure returning, following a groin strain, and Gael Clichy available after recovering a calf and shin problem, the Arsenal manager insists that he is confident he has a defence capable of coping with Bolton

“We have four defenders of quality for tomorrow. Gallas and Silvestre are out, but we are happy with what we have.”

Wenger has been linked with a move for former defender Matthew Upson, now at West Ham, and while he admitted he admired the player, he insisted he would not be moving for the England defender.

“I like him personally but again I wouldn’t like to come out on that. We are not looking to buy defensive side.

Newcastle reject Bolton bid for Joey Barton

Bolton have joined Portsmouth in the race to sign the 26-year-old, who is still recovering from a knee injury.

Newcastle have already rejected one bid from Gary Megson's Bolton but are willing to offload the controversial midfielder at the right price, claim the Guardian .

St James' Park manager Joe Kinnear would like to retain the services of Barton, yet it is believed that owner Mike Ashley would prefer to cash in on a player who has spent a part of his Newcastle tenure in prison.

Bolton are said to have tabled a £2m bid, with a further £1m to follow if certain conditions were met. It is expected, however, that Portsmouth will return with a higher bid for the former Manchester City player.

Tony Adams has indentified Barton as the ideal replacement for Lassana Diarra. He would also bolster a midfield which will be without Pape Bouba Diop, who has been ruled out of action for three months through injury.

Newcastle paid £5.8 million for Barton 18 months ago but the player has been plagued by injury and controversy. Last summer the former England international served 74 days of a six-month prison sentence for affray and assault. He was also given a suspended six-month and six-match ban for a training-ground assault on former City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

His past behaviour is unlikely to ward off Adams, who knows the player well through the Sporting Chance clinic which the former Arsenal captain established.

Equally, Megson is not deterred by Barton's previous misdemeanours and tried to sign him only last summer.

Barton, who has not played since Newcastle's home draw against Wigan on Nov 15, is expected to make a faster than expected return from injury at the end of the month. Given Bolton and Portsmouth's interest, however, the player may have already played his last game for the club.

Mark Hughes has to buy before he sells at Manchester City

Mark Hughes has to buy before he sells at Manchester City

Hughes has admitted he has received “tentative enquiries” about some of his players but is adamant he will not let anyone leave without signing a replacement first.

The Abu Dhabi United Group that own City have reportedly handed the manager around £60 million to spend this month to bolster a team that currently lie just two points outside the relegation places, even though they are in mid-table.

Hughes has already been active in the market, bringing in £12 million left-back Wayne Bridge, while he has also had bids for Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz and West Ham duo Craig Bellamy and Scott Parker rejected.

Although much of the focus has been on who will arrive at the City of Manchester Stadium this month, it has also been reported that the Welshman is considering selling Jo, Elano and Tal Ben Haim, who are all believed to be unsettled.

Hughes admitted he could sell this month, but insisted he must buy first to bolster his injury-hit squad.

“We’ve had tentative enquiries, no offers or bids,” Hughes said.

“I’m not really in a position to allow players to go before we get players in given the amount of players we have unavailable at the moment.

“I’d much prefer to get players in rather than letting players go out first.”

Nonetheless, Hughes admitted that he could send several of City’s younger players out on loan for them to gain valuable first-team experience.

“We’ll look at that because I think it’s important that certain players need to be tested and we will need to see if they can deal with senior football on a regular basis,” he said.

“So we will be looking to possibly get some of the younger players out to see how they cope.

“You have to take them on an individual basis because some players would suit a different type of club and it’s about matching the player’s ability and their style to the correct club, not just sending them out hoping that they are going to do well. There has to be a little bit of thought behind it.”

Save us and you can go, Sam Allardyce hints to Roque Santa Cruz

Rovers manager Allardyce is battling to keep hold of the Paraguayan after rejecting a £16 million bid from Manchester City.

City manager Mark Hughes, who signed the 27-year-old for Blackburn for £3.8 million from Bayern Munich in July 2007, is preparing a new offer but Allardyce said Blackburn will only consider selling if City "blow us out of the water" with a huge bid.

But he has hinted that he will be ready to offload Santa Cruz at the end of the season. "My message on Roque is that we simply want him to stay with us, get fit, help Blackburn stay in the Premier League and then see what the summer brings.

"There will always be a price on a player, but at the moment we cannot put a price on his head. The simple fact is that, rather than accept 'X' amount of millions for him, he is much more valuable to us staying at the club than any money we would get for him."

Blackburn travel to Fulham looking to climb out of the bottom three. And with struggling City just four points ahead of Blackburn in the table, Allardyce admits that there would be no sense in selling Santa Cruz – who has a calf tear – to a relegation rival.

''We don't really want to help one of our closest rivals by selling one of our best players to them. We are both in a battle for survival and that has to be taken into consideration.''

Meanwhile, Paul Ince believes he should have been given more time at Blackburn. The 41-year-old felt his sacking was premature when he made way for Allardyce.

"Whatever club you go to you want to bring in your own players. You need to build your own team, but unfortunately we didn't have that time."

Defoe moves to Spurs

Jermain Defoe?s move from Portsmouth to Tottenham completed

Defoe joins for 15 million.

Defoe agreed terms to rejoin the club he left just over a year ago earlier in the week and was paraded to fans ahead of the Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory over Burnley - but the paperwork was not filed immediately.

The Premier League now have the 26-year-old’s registration and he is free to play at the JJB Stadium this weekend.

“We are delighted to welcome Jermain back to the club,” said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who claimed the player was only allowed to leave White Heart Lane as Defoe wanted first team football and he was nearing the end of his contract.

“We had previously been keen for Jermain to sign a new contract to extend his initial stay but at that point in time he felt it was in his interests to move on in order to guarantee himself more starts,” Levy said.

“I know the club is close to his heart and that he is thrilled to be back and to once again link up with Harry.”

Manager Harry Redknapp has hinted he is ready to pair Defoe in attack with Roman Pavyluchenko.

“This is the third club I have signed him for because I know what a top-class player he is as well as a proven goalscorer,” Redknapp said.

“I am pleased to have him here and I am sure the supporters are looking forward to seeing him back in a Spurs shirt.

Michael Owen Agreed to join Man City

Michael Owen - Newcastle's Michael Owen in summer transfer to Manchester City

The Daily Express reports that the 29-year-old has held talks with City officials and manager Mark Hughes in recent weeks, and agreed to join the richest club in the world if they avoid relegation.

Owen has so far refused to sign a contract extension at St James' Park despite being offered an additional 12 months. The report claims that City are offering a three-year deal worth £90,000-a-week.

Owen has only score 29 goals for Newcastle since his £16 million transfer from Real Madrid, and with the opportunity to leave on a Bosman transfer it seems Joe Kinnear's best option could well be to cash-in on him now.

Kinnear has made no secret of the fact that all his players are dispensable provided the right offer comes along, and club owner Mike Ashley recently said he wants to dispose of players who want to leave to make way for fresh, young talent.

Last month Owen announced he would defer any decision on his future until the end of the season. Amid rumours of monetary demands he said he was happy to take a pay-cut and asked that fans did not consider him delaying as being disloyal.

"Following speculation about my future at Newcastle United, I have decided today to make it clear that I am committed to the club until at least the end of this season, and I have informed them I do not want to make a decision about my future until that time," he said.

"I hope this will be seen as a positive step and not seen as being disloyal in any way.

"My decision is not about money. I told the club some months ago that I would accept a reduction in my wages."

Newcastle also stand to lose Charles N'Zogbia who is interested in a move to Arsenal and Joey Barton who is wanted by Portsmouth and Bolton.

MILAN, Oddo: "I could stay at Bayern"

MILAN, Oddo: AC Milan wingback Massimo Oddo, currently on loan at Bayern, would like to remain at the German club: "My loan period will expire next summer, but I am fine at Bayern and I would like to stay. The decision is not up to me, the clubs will decide". According to the loan deal, Bayern can exercise the option to sign Oddo on a permanent basis by the beginning of April.
