Andrei Arshavin an Arsenal target as Arsene Wenger looks to add quality

Andrei Arshavin move held up by Zenit St Petersburg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains interested in signing Andriy Arshavin, the Zenit St Petersburg forward, though he preferred to play a straight bat when questioned about the Russian, available for £20 million.

“The situation from our perspective is to keep everything secret and quite and not to talk too much,” said Wenger.

“Tactically the selling club is always more interested to getting things public than the buying club. I cannot confirm or deny anything.

“It’s like every January: in December everybody becomes absolutely agitated, but so far we are seeing what we see every year, there are very few moves. If you understand the financial situation you understand why most clubs are very quiet.

“Nothing is missing from our squad but you always want to add some quality to what you have. I believe we are a bit short number wise.

“But we have enough quality. We have a squad of quality and we want always to improve that kind of quality.”

The Frenchman is refusing to panic despite the fact that he is down to four fit mainstream defenders for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Bolton.

And Wenger insists that he will not be bringing a new defender to the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger confirmed that central defender William Gallas is out for up to four weeks, while Mikael Silvestre, another defender, will be missing for three weeks.

However, with Kolo Toure returning, following a groin strain, and Gael Clichy available after recovering a calf and shin problem, the Arsenal manager insists that he is confident he has a defence capable of coping with Bolton

“We have four defenders of quality for tomorrow. Gallas and Silvestre are out, but we are happy with what we have.”

Wenger has been linked with a move for former defender Matthew Upson, now at West Ham, and while he admitted he admired the player, he insisted he would not be moving for the England defender.

“I like him personally but again I wouldn’t like to come out on that. We are not looking to buy defensive side.
